My work normally resides either in the areas of sound or video and this exhibit represents explorations in combining these ideas in a new visual object. Each of these works first existed as video that was recorded from a analog video process that I experimented with while in residency at Experimental Television Center, in NY state. I used a series of video processes to create the video that I then cut out frames that were printed.
As I separated myself from the creation of the work and analyzed the appearance of the prints, notions of simplicity and divination as I look deeper into the work and find new ideas.
Technical Description:
While creating this work I chose the technically simple but complex audio sine wave from a hand-built synthesizer. As I tried to figure out ways of visualizing this sound with computerized mechanisms, I decided that I would use overly direct approach. Since this synthesizer was powered with electrical voltage and that is what generated the sine wave I decided to connect a low voltage signal (+ or – 5 volts) to the input of a video signal generator. The result was something similar to what is seen in these images except that it was black and white. I then used another piece of equipment that was connected to the output of the video signal generator to shift the color values.
This was all created as a studio performance and recorded to video tape. To construct the prints I digitize the video and took single frames out of the video using my eye to determine what I liked in as a still image.
